Quick checks before you call

Four safe things to look at first.

These take a few minutes and sometimes save a service call. If none of them helps, leave the rest to a technician.

  • Thermostat. Set to Cool, a few degrees below room temperature, with fresh batteries if it uses them.
  • Breaker, once. If the AC or furnace breaker has tripped, reset it one time. If it trips again, stop and call us.
  • Filter. A clogged filter can starve the coil of air until it ices over. Swap it and give the system time to thaw.
  • Outdoor unit. Clear away leaves, cottonwood fluff, deck furniture and anything stacked within a couple of feet.

Leave refrigerant and wiring to us.

Don't open electrical panels on the outdoor unit or add refrigerant yourself. Both need licensed tools and training, and a burning smell or buzzing from the unit means switch it off at the thermostat and call.

Reading the signs

What your air conditioner is telling you.

You notice Common causes What happens next
Fan blows, but the air isn't cold A failed capacitor or contactor, a stopped outdoor fan, or low refrigerant from a leak We test the outdoor unit's electrical parts and pressures, then quote the fix
Ice on the copper lines or indoor coil A dirty filter, weak airflow or a refrigerant problem Turn cooling off so it thaws, then book a visit
Water around the furnace or air handler A clogged condensate drain or a cracked pan Clearing the drain is usually a quick repair
Short bursts of cooling, then off again An oversized system, a thermostat problem or an overheating compressor We check run times, controls and the compressor
Older system needs refrigerant It may run on R-22, which we no longer use We explain replacement choices, including a heat pump

Part-time lake homes

When the house has been closed up since fall.

Second homes often find out the AC has a problem on the first hot weekend. A little attention on both ends of the season helps.

Opening up for summer

  • Put in a new filter before the first cooling run
  • Pull the cover off the outdoor unit if one was used
  • Run cooling for half an hour and feel the supply vents
  • Check the drain line where it exits for a steady drip, not a puddle inside
  • Book a spring tune-up a few weeks ahead of guests

Away for a while

  • Set a moderate cooling temperature instead of off, if the house holds anything heat-sensitive
  • A Wi-Fi thermostat can warn you when the house gets too warm
  • Leave a key with a caretaker who can let a technician in
  • Keep the area around the outdoor unit clear for summer renters

Fix it or replace it

When a repair stops making sense.

Age and repair history

Fifteen or more summers, or a repair most years, usually means it's time to price a new system next to the repair.

R-22 refrigerant

We no longer use R-22. A leak on an R-22 system generally points toward replacing the outdoor unit and coil.

Heating in the same decision

If an electric furnace heats the house, a heat pump can take over both jobs, and Chelan PUD may contribute.

Pricing a replacement

New systems get a free in-home estimate. A ducted heat pump runs $15,331 to $26,702 installed, and one that replaces an electric furnace may qualify for a $3,300 Chelan PUD incentive. An AC-only system gets no utility rebate.

Rebates are provided and approved only by Chelan PUD. Amounts and eligibility are subject to change. Ask us about standard heat pump rebates.

Can you recharge my old R-22 air conditioner?

No. We no longer use R-22. If your system needs refrigerant and runs on R-22, we'll explain your replacement options, including a heat pump that cools in summer and heats in winter.

Why is my lake house AC blowing warm air after the winter?

Common causes after months of sitting are a tripped breaker, a dead thermostat battery, a failed capacitor in the outdoor unit or debris packed into the coil. Try the thermostat, the breaker once, the filter and clearing the outdoor unit, then book a visit if it still blows warm.
