Heat Pump Installation in Ellensburg, WA

Ellensburg winters freeze hard, the valley wind rarely lets up, and July afternoons run hot and dry. One heat pump can heat and cool the whole house when it's sized for the cold side and placed out of the wind. Whether a utility rebate applies depends on who sends your electric bill, so that's where we start.

Check your electric bill first

Your electric utility decides the rebate question.

Not every Ellensburg address buys power from the same place. Look at the name on your electric bill: City of Ellensburg customers have a city conservation program, and homes outside city limits may be on Kittitas PUD or another utility.

Potential utility incentive

  • The city offers conservation rebates for heat pumps and ductless systems in homes heated with electric space heat.
  • The city hasn't published rebate amounts, so we don't quote one.
  • Check your eligibility with the city before you buy: (509) 962-7124.
  • The equipment has to meet the BPA minimums the city lists: 7.5 HSPF2 for ductless, and 7.5 HSPF2 with 14.3 SEER2 for an air source heat pump.

Homes outside city limits

  • Your power may come from Kittitas PUD or another utility.
  • We make no rebate claim for those addresses on this page.
  • Ask your own utility about current programs before you sign for equipment.
  • Our installed prices below stand on their own, with no rebate built in.

Chelan PUD amounts don't carry over to Ellensburg.

Pages about Wenatchee, Cashmere and Leavenworth mention Chelan PUD heat pump incentives. Those belong to Chelan PUD customers in Chelan County. They don't apply to an Ellensburg home, whichever utility serves it.

Two hard seasons

A heat pump for a windy valley.

Kittitas Valley winters bring cold snaps that test any heating system, and the wind adds to the load on the house. Summers flip the problem: dry heat that keeps upstairs bedrooms warm long after sunset. A heat pump handles both, as long as it's chosen for the winter side first.

Our Wenatchee shop is about an hour away, over Blewett Pass on US-97. Ellensburg, Cle Elum and Suncadia are all part of our regular service area.

Winter sizing. We size for your heating load and pick cold-climate equipment, backed by electric heat strips or, with dual fuel, a gas furnace for the deepest cold.

A sheltered pad. The outdoor unit goes where the prevailing wind won't hammer it, lifted off the ground with clear airflow and room for snow.

Cooling where it's needed. Ducted systems are balanced to reach the hot rooms; ductless heads go where ducts can't.

What we look at during an Ellensburg walk-through

  • What heats the house today: electric furnace, baseboards, gas, propane or an aging heat pump
  • Which utility supplies your electricity, so you know whose rebate rules to check
  • Duct size and condition, if the home has ducts
  • Room in the electrical panel for the new equipment
  • A level spot for the outdoor unit, out of the wind
  • Rooms that run hot in August or cold in January

Estimates for a new system are free. NATE-certified technicians do the work.

Choosing a system

Three ways to heat and cool an Ellensburg house.

We install Carrier, Lennox, Bosch, Mitsubishi and other leading brands. Alpine Aire is a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer.

Ducted heat pump

An outdoor heat pump paired with a new indoor air handler, moving air through the ducts you already have. A common step up from an electric furnace.

Fits homes whose ducts are in good shape.

Ductless mini-split

Slim indoor heads on the wall, each serving a room or area, linked to one outdoor unit. No ductwork to build.

Fits baseboard homes, additions and shops. More on ductless →

Dual fuel

A heat pump teamed with a gas furnace. The heat pump runs most of the year, and the furnace picks up the load on the coldest nights.

Fits homes already heating with gas.

Start to finish

How an Ellensburg heat pump project comes together.

  1. A free estimate at the house. We walk the home, work out the heating load and lay out your options. If you'd rather start online, the instant price tool gives you a number first.
  2. Check the rebate before you buy. If you're a City of Ellensburg electric customer with electric heat, call the city to confirm you qualify. Ask us for the HSPF2 and SEER2 ratings of the system we quote so you can match them to the city's list.
  3. A written price you approve. You see the price before any work starts.
  4. Install day. The crew sets the outdoor unit, connects the indoor equipment and wiring, runs the system in heating and cooling, and shows you the thermostat.
  5. Warranty and upkeep. You get the manufacturer's parts warranty (Carrier's runs up to 10 years) plus our own 1 year parts and labor. Spring and fall visits keep the system ready for each season.

Older heat pump on R-22?

We no longer use R-22. If your current system runs on it, we'll price a replacement with the options side by side rather than recharge it.

Ellensburg questions

Heat pump questions from Ellensburg homeowners.

Does the City of Ellensburg give a rebate for a heat pump?

City of Ellensburg electric customers can get city conservation rebates for heat pumps and ductless systems in homes heated with electric space heat. The city hasn't published the amounts. Check your eligibility with the city at (509) 962-7124 before you buy, and make sure the equipment meets the BPA minimums the city lists.

What efficiency ratings does the city ask for?

The city lists BPA minimums: 7.5 HSPF2 for a ductless system, and 7.5 HSPF2 with 14.3 SEER2 for an air source heat pump. Ask us for the ratings of any system we quote so you can compare them with the city's list.

My home is outside Ellensburg city limits. Is there a rebate?

Homes outside city limits may be served by Kittitas PUD or another utility, and we don't make a rebate claim for them. Call the utility named on your electric bill and ask about current heat pump programs before you buy.

Can I use the Chelan PUD heat pump rebates?

No. Chelan PUD's incentives are for Chelan PUD customers in Chelan County, so they don't apply to an Ellensburg home.

How much does a heat pump cost in Ellensburg?

A ducted heat pump with a new air handler runs $15,331 to $26,702 installed, and dual fuel runs $15,706 to $26,748. Ductless runs $7,000 to $8,700 for a single zone and $11,000 to $21,500 for multi-zone. These prices come before any utility rebate, and estimates for a new system are free.

Will a heat pump keep up with Ellensburg's wind and cold?

Yes, when it's sized for the heating load and backed up for the coldest weather. We choose cold-climate equipment, add electric backup heat or a gas furnace with dual fuel, and set the outdoor unit where the prevailing wind won't hit it head on.

What does a repair visit cost in Ellensburg?

Dispatch to Ellensburg is $279, and Cle Elum and Suncadia are $189. A diagnostic fee of $72, $100 or $130 is added depending on how long it takes to find the problem, and the repair is priced before work starts. After 5 pm, on weekends and on holidays, dispatch is $330 plus the diagnostic fee. These fees are not credited toward the repair.

I own a rental near Central Washington University. Can you help?

Yes. We quote and install heat pumps for rental owners and property managers the same way we do for owner-occupied homes. Rebate eligibility for a rental is the utility's decision, so check with the city or your utility before you buy.

How do I keep the heat pump running well?

Keep the outdoor unit clear of snow, leaves and drifted debris, change the filter on schedule, and have it serviced each spring and fall. The AA Comfort Club covers both visits for $300 per system a year or $25 a month, with half-off dispatch and 15% off parts and labor (gases and filters excluded).
