Why a Chelan furnace has a harder winter than you'd think.

Summers here are famous for heat, but January nights drop well below freezing and the town has seen far colder. A furnace that idles half the year has to start cleanly the first cold morning.

Gas or propane smell, or a carbon monoxide alarm going off?

Go outside with everyone first and leave switches alone. Call 911 and your gas or propane company from outdoors. When they've cleared the house, call us to find the cause.

Before you book

What the furnace is doing, and what it usually points to.

Some of these you can sort out yourself. The rest need a technician with test equipment.

What you notice Often caused by Worth trying first
Nothing happens at all Thermostat batteries, a switched-off service switch or a tripped breaker New batteries, then check the switch by the furnace and the panel
Fan runs, air stays cold An ignition, flame sensor or gas supply problem On propane, check the tank gauge. Then book a visit
Starts, then shuts down after a few minutes Overheating from a clogged filter, or a blocked vent pipe Swap the filter and clear snow from the outside pipes
Electric furnace barely warm A failed heating element, sequencer or breaker Reset a tripped furnace breaker once. If it trips again, call us
Loud bang, squeal or burning smell A motor, belt or ignition fault Turn the furnace off and book a technician

Seasonal and second homes

Closing up the lake house, and opening it again.

A lot of homes around the lake sit empty from fall to spring. Most furnace surprises in those houses show up on the first cold visit, so a little planning on each end helps.

When you leave for the season

  • Set a steady low temperature instead of turning the heat off
  • Put in a fresh filter so the furnace isn't straining all winter
  • Fill the propane tank if that's your fuel
  • Leave a key with a caretaker or neighbor who can let us in
  • Add a thermostat that can send a low-temperature alert

When you come back

  • Check the house for frozen or leaking pipes before turning water on
  • Listen for the furnace to light and run a full cycle
  • Look for drifted snow over the outside vent pipes
  • No heat? Call us, and we'll give you the price before we repair anything
  • Book a fall tune-up for next year through the AA Comfort Club

Is there after-hours furnace service at the lake?

My lake house furnace won't start on the first cold visit. Why?

After months of sitting, the usual suspects are a dead thermostat battery, a dirty flame sensor, an empty propane tank or snow over the vent pipes. Check the easy ones, then book a visit if it still won't stay lit.

Should I turn the furnace off while the house sits empty?

No. Keep a steady low setting so pipes don't freeze, and have someone who can check on the house. A thermostat that sends low-temperature alerts helps too.

Will Chelan PUD help if my furnace needs replacing?

If it's an electric furnace and you switch to a ducted heat pump for the first time, Chelan PUD lists a potential $3,300 incentive, approved before the install. Replacing a gas or propane furnace with another furnace doesn't qualify.
