Safety first

Smell gas? Leave first, then call.

If you smell gas or your carbon monoxide alarm goes off, don't try to fix the furnace. Get everyone outside, then call 911 or your gas utility from outside the house.

  • Don't touch switches or flames. Don't turn lights on or off, use the thermostat or light anything.
  • Leave the door open behind you and wait outside for the fire department or gas utility.
  • Call us once it's safe. We'll inspect and repair the furnace after the gas or CO problem is cleared.
  • Test your CO alarms every fall when the heat comes on.

What's wrong with my furnace?

Common furnace problems we fix.

Most no-heat calls come down to a handful of causes. Our technician finds the real one before recommending a fix.

  • No heat at all. Ignition, flame sensor, pressure switch or control board faults.
  • Blowing cold air. Often an ignition or safety shutoff problem. Learn more
  • Short cycling. Turns on and off too often, from airflow, sensor or sizing issues.
  • Noises or smells. Squealing, banging or a burning smell that doesn't go away.

What kind of heat do you have?

Your system What our technician checks
Gas furnace Ignition, burners, venting, blower and controls.
Electric furnace Heating elements, sequencers, breakers and blower.
Furnace with a heat pump Dual-fuel controls, defrost and backup heat. Heat pump repair

Before you call

Four safe checks that sometimes fix it.

If none of these work, stop there and call us. Don't open burner or electrical panels.

  1. Thermostat

Set to Heat, a few degrees above room temperature. Replace the batteries if the screen is blank.

  2. Breaker and switch

Check the furnace breaker and the on/off switch near the furnace (it looks like a light switch).

  3. Filter

A clogged filter can shut a furnace down. Replace it if it's gray or dusty.

  4. Vents and intake

Make sure supply vents are open and outdoor intake and exhaust pipes aren't blocked by snow.

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

Common causes are a thermostat set to "On" instead of "Auto," a dirty filter, or an ignition or flame sensor problem that makes the furnace shut off for safety. Check the thermostat and filter first. If that doesn't fix it, schedule a repair. More on cold air.

Should I repair or replace my furnace?

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the house right away without touching switches or the thermostat. From outside, call 911 or your gas utility. Call us once it's safe, and we'll inspect and repair the furnace.

Do you repair heat pumps and electric furnaces too?

Yes. We repair gas furnaces, electric furnaces and heat pumps, including dual-fuel systems. Heat pump repair.

How can I prevent furnace breakdowns?

Change the filter regularly and get a tune-up each fall before the cold sets in. Our AA Comfort Club includes a spring and a fall maintenance visit each year.
