Safety first

Smell gas? Leave first, then call.

If you smell gas or your carbon monoxide alarm goes off, don't try to fix the furnace. Get everyone outside, then call 911 or your gas utility from outside the house.

  • Don't touch switches or flames. Don't turn lights on or off, use the thermostat or light anything.
  • Leave the door open behind you and wait outside for the fire department or gas utility.
  • Call us once it's safe. We'll inspect and repair the furnace after the gas or CO problem is cleared.
  • Test your CO alarms every fall when the heat comes on.

Before you call

Four safe checks that sometimes fix it.

If none of these work, stop there and call us. Don't open burner or electrical panels.

  1. Thermostat

Set to Heat, a few degrees above room temperature. Replace the batteries if the screen is blank.

  2. Breaker and switch

Check the furnace breaker and the on/off switch near the furnace (it looks like a light switch).

  3. Filter

A clogged filter can shut a furnace down. Replace it if it's gray or dusty.

  4. Vents and intake

Make sure supply vents are open and outdoor intake and exhaust pipes aren't blocked by snow.
