Safe things to look at before you call.

These take a few minutes and sometimes bring the heat back without a visit. Anything beyond them is a job for a technician.

  • Thermostat: set to Heat, turned above the room temperature, with fresh batteries if it takes them.
  • Breaker: electric furnaces and air handlers have their own. Reset a tripped one once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us.
  • Filter: a clogged filter can make a furnace overheat and shut down. Swap it if it's gray and packed.
  • Snow on the vent pipes: if your furnace vents through plastic pipes in an outside wall, check that snow hasn't buried them.
  • Propane level: on propane, check the tank gauge. After a tank runs out, the furnace may need a technician to restart it.
  • Furnace switch: a wall switch near the furnace can get turned off by mistake.
