Worth a look before we drive over

Simple checks that sometimes bring the heat back.

Because Ellensburg is a longer trip for us, it pays to rule out the easy things first. Only do what's on this list; anything electrical or gas-related is a job for a technician.

  • Thermostat mode and batteries. It should say Heat, be set a few degrees above the room, and have working batteries if it takes them.
  • The air filter. A filter caked with dust can make the furnace overheat and lock itself out.
  • One breaker reset. If the furnace or air handler breaker has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off.
  • The service switch. Look for a light-style switch on or near the furnace and make sure it's on.
  • Outdoor vents after a storm. On many high-efficiency gas furnaces, drifted snow over the intake or exhaust pipe outside can shut the furnace down. Clear it gently by hand.
  • Propane level. If you heat with propane, check the tank gauge before calling.

If the checks don't fix it, here's how diagnosis is billed

Kittitas Valley winters

Wind and cold make an Ellensburg furnace work harder.

Steady wind pulls heat out of a house faster, so the furnace runs longer cycles and small problems surface sooner. A worn igniter or tired blower motor that limps along in a mild week often fails during the first hard cold spell.

Plenty of Ellensburg homes are rentals, too. If you own or manage one, tell us who approves repairs when you book so the technician can get a yes quickly.

On an Ellensburg repair visit we look at

  • Airflow, the filter and the blower
  • Ignition and flame sensing on gas and propane furnaces
  • Heating elements, sequencers and limits on electric furnaces
  • Venting and outdoor pipes for blockage
  • Thermostat wiring and settings

Gas smell or a carbon monoxide alarm? Get out, then call.

Leave the house with everyone in it and call your gas supplier, propane company or 911 from outside. Don't use switches or try to restart the furnace.

Fix it or retire it?

How we help you decide when a furnace is getting old.

What the technician weighs with you
1
How often it has needed help

One repair in many years is normal. A service call every winter is a pattern worth talking about.

2
What this repair costs against the furnace's remaining life

An expensive part on a furnace near the end of its run can be money better put toward a new system.

3
Safety findings

If something we find makes the furnace unsafe to run, we'll explain it plainly and show you.

4
Comfort you've been living with

Cold rooms, noise or dry air may be reasons to look at a different system, not just a new part.

  • Either way, you get the repair price before we start, and the choice stays yours.
  • Estimates on new systems are free, even if we came out for a repair first.

Ellensburg furnace repair FAQ

Common questions from Kittitas Valley homeowners.

How much is a furnace repair visit in Ellensburg?

A weekday visit in Ellensburg has a $279 dispatch fee and a diagnostic fee of $72, $100 or $130 depending on the time needed to find the fault. The repair and parts are quoted after that, and nothing is done until you approve the price.

Why is the dispatch fee higher in Ellensburg than in Wenatchee?

Our shop is in Wenatchee, and Ellensburg is on the far side of Blewett Pass. The dispatch fee covers getting a technician and a stocked truck to you, so it rises with distance. In Wenatchee it is $119.

Can you come out at night or on a weekend?

Yes. After-hours emergency service covers Ellensburg. After 5 p.m., on weekends and on holidays the dispatch fee is $330, plus the diagnostic fee.

Do you repair furnaces in rental homes?

Yes. When you book, let us know who approves repairs. The technician gives the repair price to that person before starting.

The furnace runs, but the house won't warm up on windy days. Why?

It can be a clogged filter, a weak blower, leaky ductwork or a furnace that's too small for the house. Drafty windows and doors add to it. A diagnostic visit tells you whether the furnace is at fault or something else is.

Do you work on electric and propane furnaces?

Yes. We repair electric, natural gas and propane furnaces, along with heat pump air handlers and their backup heat strips.

What if the repair isn't worth it?

The technician will say so and explain why. We give free estimates on new systems, including furnaces, dual fuel systems and heat pumps.
